Students Rally Against Judge's Ruling For Oakland Coal Hub

A group of middle and high school students held a rally Thursday at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland to protest a judge’s ruling that a developer can move forward with building an export hub for coal.

The group is calling for environmental justice, saying they refuse to give up trying to stop developer Phil Tagami and the Bowie Resource Partners Coal Company from developing a part of the Port of Oakland to transport millions of tons of coal.

“We’ve been told over and over again by Phil Tagami that coal’s going to have no effect because it’s going to be covered when it’s coming into Oakland,” organizer Ivan Garcia said. “We’ve seen studies and research, and we found that that is just not true.”

The developer’s attorney said they are reviewing the court’s ruling and have nothing more to add at this time.
