Several dogs have died in the past 10 days in the Venice area due to an unknown cause, the Venice Canal Association said in a social media post.
At least five “healthy neighborhood dogs” died and another is in the ICU with symptoms including:
- Vomiting
- Sudden weakness or lethargy
- Seizures
- cardiac arrest
- Collapse
- Foaming at the mouth
Although the cause of these symptoms and the canines’ deaths are not confirmed, the association said they could be linked to rodent poison, toxic algae bloom or other toxins or viruses.
“The dogs we’ve lost were more than pets — they were beloved family members, loyal companions, and treasured parts of the Venice Canals community. They will be missed dearly and always remembered with love,” the association said in a social media post.
Pet owners are urged to take precautions when walking their pets along the Venice canals and keep them on a leash.
They are also urged to avoid letting their pets sniff, lick or eat grass or other objects while on their walks. They should also avoid drinking water from the canals, puddles or any shared water bowls.
If any pet owners detect any unusual symptoms, it is recommended that they take them to a vet immediately.
“If you’ve seen anything or have info to share, please scan the QR code in the flyer or reach out. Together, we can help protect each other’s fur babies,” the post continued.
The Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health Department has a form to report cases.
