Small plane crashes off Monterey coast, search underway for 3

A search is underway for at least three people after a twin-engine plane crashed late Saturday night off the Central Coast near Monterey, authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it received a report around 11:15 p.m. about a downed aircraft near the Monterey Peninsula, roughly 200 to 300 feet off Point Pinos Lighthouse, a popular landmark near the Monterey Peninsula.

The twin-engine plane departed from San Carlos Airport and was set to land at the Monterey Bay Airport, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Three people are believed to have been on board the aircraft. Their identities have not been released.

Multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard, are actively searching the area using boats, helicopters and drones.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

This is a developing story.
