A vacant five-story building was engulfed in flames on Sunday, leading to full closure of Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys, the fire department said.
The structure fire was reported in the 7100 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard and firefighters were operating in a defensive manner using multiple heavy streams in attacking the fire from the building’s exterior, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
More than 120 LAFD personnel were assigned to what the “Major Emergency Fire,” the department said.
No other buildings were threatened, according to the LAFD.
Sepulveda Boulevard was shut down between Vose Street and Sherman Way as of 4:42 p.m., the fire department said.
The Los Angeles Police Department was assisting in moving a large contingent of homeless people in an adjacent parking lot threatened by falling debris, according to the LAFD.
The fire was declared a knockdown at around 5:58 p.m., with 125 LAFD firefighters taking an hour and 43 minutes to extinguish the flames. Sepulveda Boulevard was expected to to remain closed, according to the LAFD.
No one was believed to have been injured and the cause of the fire was under investigation, the LAFD said.
