Mandatory Evacuations Ordered After Brush Fire Shuts Down 134 Freeway in Eagle Rock

A brush fire erupted near the border of Glendale and Eagle Rock and shut down the 134 Freeway in both directions, resulting in evacuation orders for about 100 homes in a nearby neighborhood.

Mandatory evacuation orders were in place on Glenoaks Boulevard from Mount Carmel Drive to Bywood Drive, including all streets in between, the Glendale Police Department said.

An evacuation shelter is located at the Civic Auditorium at 1401 North Verdugo Rd., the city of Glendale said.

Road closures and evacuation orders were expected to be lifted around 10 p.m., according to Glendale Fire Chief Silvio Lanzas.

Along with the 134 Freeway being shut down in both directions, the 2 Freeway was also shut down in both directions, along with the eastbound and westbound 210 Freeway transition to the southbound 2 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP asked all drivers to avoid the area and to take the 210 Freeway, 110 Freeway or the 5 Freeway as alternates.

In addition, Glenoaks Boulevard was shut down starting at Mount Carmel Drive to Canyon Drive, Dan Suttles of the Glendale Police Department said.

Newschopper4 Bravo was over the fire around 4:30 p.m. and observed the flames threatening both side fo the 134 Freeway near the 2 Freeway, as the flames appeared to have jumped the freeway.

The brush fire was reported in the 2900 block of West Colorado Boulevard around 4:09 p.m. and was about an acre, according to the Glendale Fire Department.

Soon after, the 134 Freeway was shut down in both directions, at Figueroa Street westbound and eastbound at Glendale Boulevard. The 2 Freeway was also shut down southbound at East Mountain Street and northbound at Colorado Boulevard, Caltrans said.

The fire had grown to five acres shortly before 5 p.m., according to the Glendale Fire Department. By 6:30 p.m., the fire was logged at 20-25 acres, according to the Los Angles Fire Department. About 90 minutes later, officials said the fire had grown to 30 acres at a news conference.

Three LAFD helicopters were conducting continuous water drops, along with the Air-Crane and LA County Fire Department had an additional two helicopters on scene, the LAFD said. More than 215 LAFD firefighters were on the scene, along with Glendale and LA County resources, according to the LAFD.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, the Glendale Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, authorities said.
