Los Angeles firefighters battled a large structure fire in the Green Meadows area Saturday at what first appeared to be a furniture manufacturing business but also appeared to be a marijuana grow operation, fire officials said.
The fire was dubbed the “87th Place Fire” and was labeled a “Major Emergency” incident, according to the LAFD, which said 148 firefighters were on scene as of 3:15 p.m. The number of personnel assigned to the fire increased to 170 by 4:30 p.m., the department said.
The fire was burning in the 8700 block of South Crocker Street, east of the 110 Freeway and north of the 105 Freeway and was first reported at 2:19 p.m.
The department said the fire appeared to have badly damaged “what at first appeared to be solely an expansive furniture manufacturing business, but also now appears to have housed a marijuana grow operation.”
Newschopper4 was over the flames around 3:40 p.m., with firefighters in defensive positions battling the fire that could be seen for miles in every direction. The LAFD said the fire initially started as an “outside fire” before spreading into the large commercial building.
As of 4:30 p.m., the LAFD said firefighters were continuing in defensive operations and said the situation remained a “Major Emergency” incident.
Around 6:30 p.m., the fire was declared a knockdown. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
No injuries were reported, the department said.
