SoCal Gas crews were working to cap a major gas leak that prompted evacuations near the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica Monday.
The Santa Monica Police Department announced about 3:50 p.m. that officers and Santa Monica Fire Department units were called to the 200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard due to a ruptured gas main in the area.
Officers evacuated pedestrians in the 200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard and 1300 to 1400 block of Third Street Promenade as SoCal gas teams were called to cap the leak.
No injuries were reported, but streets in the area were expected to be closed for at least five hours as crews worked to repair the leak. It was not immediately known what caused the gas main to leak.
