Firefighters are working to control a fire that broke out Wednesday evening at a recycling yard at the Port of Oakland that sent plumes of smoke that could be seen for miles.
The fire, reported at 5:30 p.m. at Schnitzer Steel, has been contained but crews have yet to get it under control, Oakland fire department spokesperson Michael Hunt said at 7:30 p.m.
No injuries have been reported.
The fire is confined to a single pile at the recycling yard, located at 1100 Embarcadero West.
The fire department requested the City of Alameda’s fire boat to provide support from the estuary.
Firefighters will likely remain at the scene for a few more hours, Hunt said. The cause is under investigation.
