Four people were killed in a wrong-way crash involving a sedan and a taxi on northbound Highway 101 in San Francisco early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The grisly wreck happened around 12:30 a.m. just north of Candlestick Point near the 3rd Street exit, CHP Officer Bert Diaz said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears a female driver in a Volkswagen sedan was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when she crashed into a Ford Escape taxi carrying a driver and two passengers, Diaz said.
All four people were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Diaz.
The taxi was being driven by a man in his 60s, Diaz said. The two passengers have only been identified as a male and a female.
It appears one taxi passenger was ejected during the crash, according to Diaz. The CHP is trying to determine if the people in the taxi were using seat belts.
Investigators are also looking into whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the wreck.
All northbound lanes of the highway were shut down after the crash. Two lanes reopened just before 5 a.m. The remaining lanes reopened around 7 a.m.
