Will the U.N. finally strike global treaty to reduce plastic pollution?

Leaders from around the globe are gathering in Geneva, Switzerland this week as part of a years’ long effort by the United Nations to broker the world’s first-ever plan to reduce plastic pollution. Previous negotiations stalled, in part, because of disagreements over whether the treaty should include caps on the amount of plastic produced globally.

Advocates insist it’s not enough to just clean up the plastic already made, noting the agreement should also restrict how much new plastic is manufactured in the future. Opponents, however, argue the move could cost jobs.

The potential impact on U.S. manufacturing remains a concern for the Trump administration and just a single objection by a U.N. member nation could throw off the entire negotiation process.

Senior Investigative Reporter Bigad Shaban explains what’s at stake as global leaders move ahead on a possible treaty vote later this week.
