You think you’ve seen it all in baseball—until you haven’t.
In the top of the fourth inning of Game 1 of the 2025 NLCS, with the Los Angeles Dodgers threatening to blow the game open, the Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a double play so improbable it left fans at American Family Field, everyone watching across the country, and even the players on the field, all in stunned disbelief.
With the bases loaded and one out, Max Muncy sent a towering fly ball to deep center field—one that looked destined to clear the wall or, at worst, bring in multiple runs. But Brewers center fielder Sal Frelick had other plans.
Frelick tracked the ball to the warning track, timed his leap perfectly, and just barely grazed the ball with his glove. It ricocheted off the top of the wall, then off his glove again—before somehow settling back into it as he fell onto the track. The play looked like something out of a video game.
But it wasn’t over. Frelick immediately fired the ball to the cutoff man, who relayed home to William Contreras. The throw beat Teoscar Hernández, who had tagged from third, for a stunning force out at the plate. And in the chaos, Contreras alertly ran to third base, stepping on the bag to retire Will Smith, who had hesitated between bases and couldn’t advance in time.
Just like that, what looked like a guaranteed Dodgers rally turned into an inning-ending double play—a sequence equal parts chaos, athleticism, and awareness.
For context, the Dodgers runners wisely all went back to their respective bags to tag. However, once the ball hit Frelick’s glove, Hernandez and Smith should have immediately ran to home and third base, respectively. Instead, they hesitated and Hernandez even ran back to third base after he saw the ball bounce off of Frelick’s glove, off the wall, and back into his glove.
As the MLB rule for sacrifice flies states, once the ball touches the fielder’s glove, the runner can advance, regardless if he bobbles it several times and still catches it. That mistake by Hernandez cost the Dodgers a run.
From a near-grand slam to a two-for-one heartbreak, the Dodgers walked off the field empty-handed, shaking their heads. And as the crowd buzzed in disbelief, one truth became clear: in baseball, you really do see something new every day.
Here’s the unreal play:
