U.S. Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women's sports

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee is barring transgender women from competing in women’s sports to comply with the Trump administration’s new policy.

In a letter to the Team USA community obtained by NBC News, the committee said “as a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations. The guidance we’ve received aligns with the Ted Stevens Act, reinforcing our mandated responsibility to promote athlete safety and competitive fairness.”

Last fall, the issue was spotlighted at the collegiate level with a player on the San Jose State women’s volleyball team and a resulting debate that divided the Mountain West Conference.
