Two Simi Valley teens admit to hate crimes in movie theater parking lot assault

Two of the five juveniles involved in a Simi Valley parking lot attack in August admitted to felony assault and hate crimes, the District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced.

One of the two juveniles also admitted to his involvement in the criminal threat case at the same location in May, according to the Ventura County DA’s Office.

Five teens were charged in connection with the Aug. 1 assault in a movie theater parking lot in the Ventura County community.

Sentencing for the two juveniles who admitted the charges is scheduled for Nov. 13 and Nov. 19.

Video of the parking lot altercation appeared to show a group of young men being attacked outside the movie theater. At the time of the arrests in August, authorities said they were investigating reports of racial slurs used during the attack.

Three of the suspects were charged with felony assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, with the special allegation of a hate crime for each one. A fourth was charged with felony assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, and misdemeanor criminal threats and misdemeanor battery. A fifth teen faces charges of misdemeanor criminal threats and misdemeanor battery.
