Sunland woman transforms Little Free Library to give away free food

A Sunland homeowner has transformed her Little Free Library into Little Free Food Pantry by replacing the books with food during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

“Until SNAP benefits are fully restored, this Little Free Library is going to be a little free food pantry,” said Mary Soracco. “You can come and take anything you need.”

A few weeks back, Soracco replaced her community books with canned goods, pasta, fresh fruit and snacks.

The longtime Sunland resident said it’s the least she can do to help federal workers and those receiving a portion of their usual SNAP benefits, known in California as CalFresh.

“The only thing that we can do is have communities come together and give this kind of mutual aid because we cannot count on our governments to do it,” she said.

Soracco’s little free food pantry has gained traction on social media.

It’s located on Langmuir Avenue between Foohill Boulevard and Fenwick Street in Sunland.

“I think it’s absolutely fantastic,” she said. “I hope that that leads to people who need it using it.”

Soracco said she’s grateful to those who have donated cash to help her keep the food stocked fresh daily.

She said she plans to keep her efforts going as long as the shutdown continues.

“I hope I have to fill it many more times. Well, actually, no, I don’t hope I have to fill it many more times,” Soracco explained. “But I hope that people know it’s here, that they can come and fill their bellies.”
