Stanford University to slash $140M from budget, leads to potential layoffs

Stanford University announced in a letter to the campus community that it is slashing $140 million from its budget due to funding cuts at the federal level.

Under President Donald Trump, the government has been slashing research grants as well as higher education funding.

“Though the budget reductions in the period ahead will be painful, we are confident that by acting now to put Stanford on a stronger and more resilient financial footing, we will be better positioned to pursue excellence and new opportunities going forward,” read the university’s statement.

According to Stanford, the cuts could include layoffs and reductions to programs. However, the School of Medicine will be spared.
