Work to repair a section of southbound I-680 south of Pleasanton is creating hours of delays for drivers.
As a result of the bumper to bumper traffic on I-680 south of Pleasanton on Saturday, Stephanie Hope said her drive from Lodi to San Jose that usually takes less than two hours turned into a five-hour nightmare.
“This is what it looks like in the movies, there’s a bottleneck and everyone’s trying to get out of Dodge,” said Hope.
She said drivers were so tired of going nowhere, they got out of their cars to stretch and walk their dogs. As she sat in traffic for more than two hours, Hope worried about her own dog in the car and missing her 6-year-old niece’s birthday because of the delays.
“It’s frustrating. I missed my niece’s birthday party… I had her gift, and my entire family was there,” she said.
Caltrans is closing this section of southbound I-680 for 55 hours this weekend to make critical bridge and pavement repairs.
Michael Williams was headed to San Jose, but said the congestion convinced him to pivot to Vacaville instead.
“Once we got stuck in that traffic, I changed my route and said, ‘OK, we’re gonna go the opposite way. We’re gonna go to my cousin’s house for the night,’” said Williams.
Christian Tamayo created his own detour to avoid sitting on I-680 for more than two hours.
“I took the bridge and then I cut through Hayward and cut through Castro Valley to get around the traffic,” said Tamayo.
The closure will remain in effect through Sunday, but Caltrans says the section of southbound I-680 is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
