Some OC cities open temporary trash drop-off sites during labor dispute

Residents all around Orange County are experiencing delays in trash and recycling collection this week as a result of labor issues at Republic Services, the city’s waste management contractor.

Republic Services is the second-largest waste hauler in North America. 

Workers in Orange County have honored a picket line extended by striking Teamsters from Massachusetts who are demanding higher wages and refined health benefits. 

The delays began on July 9, and residents in affected neighborhoods are advised to leave their trash carts at the curb, not in the street, until they are serviced.

Despite the service interruptions, street sweeping will continue as scheduled, even in areas where bins have not been emptied. 

According to the city of Santa Ana, Republic Services will implement an accelerated recovery schedule and will be working through the weekend to catch up on missed collections.

Cities like Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Anaheim and Huntington Beach have now resumed services.

Other cities in the county have also been responding to the rapid collection efforts and establishing temporary drop-off locations. 

Seal Beach

• A 40-yard roll-off container was delivered Friday to the Public Works Yard at 1776 Adolfo Lopez Drive to assist with immediate trash disposal needs. 
• Residents can also drop off bagged household waste at the Seal Beach Tennis and Pickleball Center, located at 3900 Lampson Ave.

Placentia

• Residents can dispose of bagged household trash at a temporary roll-off bin located at Kraemer Memorial Park. 
• They can also use the Republic Services facility at 2740 E. Coronado St., open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Garden Grove 

• The Garden Grove Sanitary District has 12 temporary trash drop-off locations available for residents. However no bulky items, organics or recyclables will be accepted.

• Morningside Elementary, 10521 Morningside Dr.

• Garden Grove Courtyard Center, 12732 Main St.
• Harvest Lane and Ball Rd.
• Sanitary District Maintenance Office, 11700 Knott Ave.
• Garden Grove Blvd. and Nichols Dr.
