San Jose announces AI education program for the public

A new FoodMaxx grocery store opened in Santa Clara Wednesday.

The new store is located on El Camino Real in Santa Clara at the site of a former Lucky grocery store.

The store’s grand opening was meant to send a simple message to residents: a low-cost supermarket has arrived.

The FoodMaxx store has actually been open in a limited fashion for a while, but when the old Lucky store closed in the area earlier this year, the city says many people just assumed they lost their only neighborhood store again.

“In the last several years I’m used to the grocery stores ‘closing’ in Santa Clara so what a wonderful announcement to ‘open’ a store especially in this neighborhood which is a like a ‘food desert’ here,” said Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor.

In terms of cost for some basic items, eggs at this FoodMaxx store were generally about $1 to $2 cheaper and beef was generally about the same as most competitors.

The nonprofit Bill Wilson Center in Santa Clara, which helps those in need, says in this neighborhood, every penny counts.

“Inflation is real and it’s really hitting all the families in this area that probably have a very set income, and some of the youth that we serve live in this community so they need an affordable place to shop,” said Crescencia with the Bill Wilson Center.

“Sometimes it’s hard to fill up a tank of gas, so to be able to have this grocery store right here in this neighborhood, to get some groceries… very important,” said Marco Torres, a Santa Clara resident.

FoodMaxx says that won’t change, especially with Thanksgiving approaching.

“We hold those prices down. We work with our vendors to give the customer what they want: a lot of staples. So rice, beans, vegetables… in fact we’re guaranteed lowest prices on turkeys,” said Jim Perkins, the president of the store.

This store is currently offering turkeys for about 4-to-cents a pound cheaper than most competitors. Additionally, the first 100 shoppers who spend more than $20 will receive a free bag of groceries and a coupon.
