San Francisco leaders expect traffic but ‘no significant issues' during ‘No Kings' protest

At a press conference on Friday, San Francisco city leaders said they are anticipating peaceful demonstrations on Saturday for the No Kings 2 protest.

The San Francisco protest is happening in conjunction with No Kings 2 protests around the country on Saturday, expressing opposition to the Trump administration. There are 60 of these protests scheduled across the Bay Area. The march and rally in San Francisco are hosted by Indivisible SF and National Nurses United. The organizers said they are planning for a peaceful event.

“We have been in touch with the event organizers and will work to make sure everyone is safe,” said San Francisco Police Deputy Chief Derrick Lew.

“In June, a similar protest occurred with no significant issues. We expect nothing different,” Lew said.

The first No Kings Day happened in June, and people across the country participated, including thousands in San Francisco.

City leaders spoke at a press conference on Friday to discuss recent progress in the push to make the city safer as well as their plans for weekend demonstrations.

“We will always, always protect the right to free speech and peaceful protest,” Mayor Daniel Lurie said.

“Our officers will be on the streets, and our Emergency Operations Center will be — exactly — will be set up for exactly that reason: to protect people’s First Amendment rights,” he continued.

“But I also want to be very clear, we will not tolerate any violent or destructive behavior,” Lurie said.

City leaders said the city’s police department and department of emergency management will be out in full force Saturday, with California Highway Patrol providing additional support.

SFMTA warns travelers to expect traffic midday into the afternoon on Saturday. They are updating the community on transit changes, street closures, and parking restrictions here.
