Richmond teachers prepare for possible strike with art event

Teachers in west Contra Costa County are gearing up for a possible strike, but first, they’re turning to art and activism.

Saturday, educators in Richmond joined students and local artists for an event called “Strike Ready Art Build.”

They painted banners, posters and picket signs.

Teachers are calling for fair pay, affordable healthcare and an end to chronic understaffing in their schools, which they said resulted in more than 70 vacant classrooms across the district.

Additionally, special education services are often outsourced or delivered over zoom.

Last week, 98% of teachers voted to authorize the strike if the district cannot meet their demands for better learning conditions.

The district superintendent released a statement last week, saying the district hopes a strike can be averted with a “sustainable agreement that honors our employees and continues student learning.”
