President Trump's Columbus Day proclamation sparks renewed debate in Bay Area

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a controversial bill meant to address California’s housing crisis Friday.

SB79 focuses on eight counties, including San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

The bill will allow for taller and denser housing projects near subway stations, light rail stations and even some dedicated bus lanes. How high the buildings can go depends on how close they are to a transit stop.

However, the bill also overrides any local laws that may prevent this type of housing.

The bill was authored by State Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco. NBC Bay Area’s Janelle Wang spoke to him.
