An Anaheim woman was arrested Wednesday on charges of hurling a seriously injured dog in a plastic bag over a fence, police said.
Tyler Nashae Thompson, 30, was charged Nov. 19 with felony counts of cruelty to animals and a misdemeanor count of destroying or concealing evidence.
Thompson was arrested Wednesday, according to Sgt. Matt Sutter of the Anaheim Police Department.
Surveillance video from the University Veterinary Center on Glenoaks Avenue shows the dog inside a plastic bag being tossed over a fence by a woman at about 1:36 a.m. Nov. 12, landing into the backyard area of the clinic.
The injured canine was found by Dr. Ash Hakhamian, a veterinarian at the clinic. He said the male Maltese mix suffered severe injuries from his fall, and that part of the fence’s spike strip was knocked off.
“To see he went through this, and then hit his face or whatever he hit in that bag, and we found he sustained injuries to his jaw,” Hakhamian said. “It’s just an insult to an existing injury.”
When Hakhamian found the dog, he said there were signs of neglect.
“The countless fleas all over his body, the matting,” Hakhamian said.
The dog is being treated at Orange County Animal Care.
The Anaheim Police Department said the woman who threw the dog lives near the center and was interviewed by the police. Officers said they have given the Orange County district attorney information about the woman to potentially seek charges.
Hakhamian said while he’s gotten a lot of calls about adopting the dog, the pup won’t be up for adoption for another few weeks as he recovers.
Animal owners who no longer can take care of their pets should reach out to local shelters, rescue groups or pet hospitals for resources, Hakhamian said.
