Oakland family wants change to California law after deadly shooting of teen son

A grieving Oakland family is looking for justice five months after their 15-year-old son was shot and killed on his way to soccer practice.

Derbing Alvarado was shot and killed on an East Oakland Street and his family is pleading for his alleged killer be tried as an adult. The victim’s family filed a petition in court Monday with the judge.

“There is no day that I don’t cry for my son,” Derbing’s father said. “When I see the sister, the mom — they are suffering. All they want is justice.”

The suspect in the case is 16 years old and prosecutors believe he killed Derbing during an attempted robbery.

NBC Bay Area’s Velena Jones has the story and why Derbing’s family is also hoping to change California law when it comes to prosecuting juveniles as adults.
