San Jose firefighters put out a fire that impacted 20 acres of open land on Sunday afternoon, the fire department said.

Crews received a call at 2:15 p.m. about a fire in the vicinity of Ruff Drive and West Hedding Street by the airport in San Jose.

The blaze created heavy smoke and was at 5 acres, which grew to approximately 20 acres, the fire department said. Crews dealt with some challenges, but there were no injuries and no structures were affected. Nearby encampments were also protected from the flames.

Five puppies were found in the area and turned over to animal care services.
