Missing woman found dead in Vallejo; suspect arrested

A woman reported missing in Vallejo was found dead in an attic Wednesday, and a man has been arrested on suspicion of killing her, police said.

A California Highway Patrol Ebony Alert went out for Renia Lewis, 28, on Monday after she had not been seen for a few days and Vallejo police also notified the FBI, they said.

On Wednesday, the CHP reported Lewis “located,” but did not provide any details.

Vallejo police said they had been trying to find Lewis, and their investigation led them to an address on 14th Street, where they believed she may have been before she went missing.

Investigators entered the house to conduct a welfare check and made a cursory search of rooms, closets and “places a person could hide,” Sgt. Rashad Hollis said in a release, but officers could not find any signs of Lewis.

On Wednesday, detectives headed back to the residence they had initially checked and brought a search warrant. During the search, they discovered a concealed entry into the attic, the department said. Inside the attic they found the remains of a woman they believed to be Lewis.

Police have arrested Douglas Shaw, 41, on suspicion of Lewis’ death and allege that he confessed to the crime. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of murder.

“This was a heartbreaking, senseless act of violence that has no place in our community,” police Chief Jason Ta said. “I am proud of our officers and detectives for making an arrest and solving this case. Above all, our thoughts are with the decedent’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”
