Man arrested after crashing car outside the steps of LA City Hall

An investigation is underway Friday after a vehicle crashed outside of Los Angeles City Hall, prompting police to close a stretch of Spring Street.

Police responded around 4 p.m. after the Ford Focus plowed into the steps in front of the government building.

City Hall was evacuated out of precaution, according to LA Mayor Karen Bass.

“I’ve been briefed on the ongoing incident outside of City Hall, which is currently being evacuated out of an abundance of caution. “I want to thank all first responders who are at the scene — my office will continue to monitor the situation,” wrote Mayor Bass’ Office in a statement to NBC4.

As a result of the investigation, police shut down North Spring Street from Temple and 1st Street.

Officers were trying to make contact with the driver, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

NewsChopper4 was over the scene where a drone was hovering over the stopped vehicle.

The driver eventually got out of the vehicle after nearly two hours and surrendered to LAPD officers.
