BART service in the San Francisco and East Bay directions suffered a major delay Friday evening after an equipment problem on the track in the Transbay Tunnel.
The problem was described as being on the track below San Francisco Bay, between Embarcadero Station and West Oakland Station.
BART officials suggested that travelers seek alternate means of transportation.
San Francisco firefighters asked for the power to be turned off while the situation was investigated. There was a report of smoke in the tube, BART said.
Fire officials determined there wasn’t a fire and that it was just residual smoke from BART train brakes overheating.
Sources tell the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit that there were three separate instances of smoke on different BART trains Friday. It is unclear why, or if, they are all connected.
