Long Beach, San Pedro to host 2028 Olympic sailing events

The Nordstrom store inside the Santa Monica Place is shutting down after nearly 15 years at the iconic location.

The Seattle-based fashion retailer announced the closure Monday, with the last day of business set for Aug. 26.

“We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in the area by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels,” Nordstrom said in a statement.

The three-level, 122,000-square-foot store opened in 2010 with much excitement about the location being just two blocks from the beach in downtown Santa Monica.

The company said it’s committed to taking care of its employees during the transition, including helping them find another role within Nordstrom. It’s not clear how many people will end up losing their jobs with the closure.

But as the retail landscape continues to shift, the Nordstrom store will join dozens of other retailers that ceased storefront operations.

The Macy’s store at The Bloc DTLA closed early this year as part of the company’s plan to shut down some 150 under-performing locations by 2026. With the closure of the Macy’s location has left downtown Los Angeles without a major department store for the first time in 150 years.

While Party City closed some of its locations as the company filed for bankruptcy, CVS and Walgreens also announced plans to close hundreds of stores in 2025 and over the next few years.
