Long Beach father, stepmother arrested in death of 14-month-old girl

Homicide detectives have arrested two suspects in the child abuse and killing of a 14-month-old girl who died earlier this month, authorities said.

Alfredo Munoz, 40, of Long Beach, was booked on suspicion of murder, torture and child abuse causing death. Kelly Munoz, 34, also of Long Beach, was booked on the same charges.

Officers were called to a hospital on Nov. 7 regarding a possible child abuse incident after the toddler was found unresponsive with signs of trauma, police said. Child Abuse detectives responded and began coordinating with the Department of Children and Family Services.

Later that day, medical staff told detectives the girl had been placed on life support and was not expected to survive. Homicide detectives then joined the investigation alongside Child Abuse detectives, DCFS and patrol officers.

The child died at the hospital on Nov. 10. Her identity is being withheld because of her age.

Police said that over the last two weeks, homicide investigators determined the girl had been subjected to ongoing abuse and that her father and stepmother were responsible for her death.  Detectives arrested both suspects on Nov. 25. Both were booked into the Long Beach City Jail with no bail.

Homicide detectives are scheduled to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Office next week for filing consideration.
