LA Unified School District officials say they’ll take steps to protect students and staff from the soaring temperatures expected to bake the Southland starting today and continuing throughout the region for the rest of the week.
The district noted that many areas are likely to see near-record temperatures during the heat wave.
Protective measures announced Tuesday by the district include:
— modification of schedules for recess and lunch to minimize outdoor exposure;
— rescheduling or modifying schedules for high-school athletic events and outdoor clubs;
— ensuring air conditioners are functioning, and preparing portable units if needed;
— relocating students to cooler spaces if air conditioners fail in classrooms;
— closing doors and windows to maintain cooler temperatures;
— providing frequent water breaks;
— monitoring and adjusting physical activities; and
— limiting the use of hot surfaces such as asphalt, concrete and artificial turf to cooler early hours.
Students were also urged to wear breathable, light-colored and loose- fitting clothing, to apply sunscreen and wear hats while outdoors, and to stay hydrated.
Students who experience symptoms of heat-related illness such as fatigue, dehydration or muscle cramps should report them immediately to a teacher or coach.
