Felon arrested after allegedly trying to run away from officers in Vallejo

A felon was arrested after he allegedly told officers he ran away and tried to jump a fence to avoid them because he had a firearm, the police department said.

On Sunday at around 1:40 p.m., officers observed a Toyota Prius making an unsafe left turn into a business driveway, nearly crashing with an oncoming vehicle in the area of Lewis Brown Drive and Broadway Street, according to authorities.

Police said as the vehicle came to stop, the driver immediately abandoned it and attempted to run away from officers.

Officials reported the suspect ran through a nearby commercial area and tried to jump a fence into the backyard of a nearby home, which was later determined to be his. However, police said the suspect lacked the dexterity to get over the fence and was then greeted by officers and apprehended.

During a search conducted after his arrest, the police department said officers found a loaded firearms concealed in the suspect’s pants pocket.

A records check revealed the suspect had prior felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, police said. Officials added the records check also revealed his driver’s license was expired.

The firearms, according to authorities, turned out to be registered to a person who does not live in Vallejo. Officers tried to contact the owner but were unsuccessful, officials reported.

Police said the suspect admitted, after being advised of his rights, that he ran away from officers because he had a gun.

The suspect was booked into the Solano County Jail, according to the police department.
