East Oakland residents say they are fed up with crime in their neighborhoods. They said they are taking back their community as they hosted a “Day of Action” event Wednesday.
Oakland Councilmember Treva Reid is partnering with community organizations to help in that mission, and they said this is only the first step.
Reid and more than a dozen of city, county, and grassroots organizations came together to bring missing resources directly to the East Oakland community.
“I have been waiting for collaboration such as this,” said Tonyia Carter.
The collaboration included clean-up efforts to tents filling eight blocks of International Boulevard, with everything from job and housing services, to workforce training and mental health and even free meals, organizers hope the visible actions spark change.
