East Bay communities rattle with damage from illegal fireworks displays

Five people were reported injured by fireworks on Saturday during a Fourth of July celebration in Antioch.

According to authorities, people at the celebration were setting off large, industrial-grade fireworks before an explosion happened near the 2200 block of Spanos Street.

The Antioch Police Department, ConFire and AMR provided medical services to those injured. According to the APD, some of the victims had left the scene before first responders arrived.

“This is an unfortunate accident, and our thoughts are with the family and all those affected during this difficult time. We ask for patience and privacy for the families as the investigation continues,” the Antioch Police Department said in a news release.

The incident is under investigation.
