A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to more than 16 years after he admitted to driving drunk when he struck and killed a 5-year-old Garden Grove boy in 2024
The boy, Jacob Ramirez, was on a bike ride with his parents and two siblings in July 2024 when the driver plowed into the family.
The driver, Ceferino Ascencion Ramos of Santa Ana, was sentenced to 16 years and four months in state prison after pleading guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter and other charges on Friday.
Jacob’s then 6-year-old sister and their father were critically injured.
Jacob and the sister were riding in a bike trailer being pulled by their dad when they were hit. Their mother was biking in front with the couple’s 7-month-old daughter in a bike trailer.
A crash witness followed the driver and provided police with information until officers located Ramos and took him into custody.
Ramos had a blood alcohol content of .22, nearly three times the legal limit of .08.
As Jacob’s family members gave victim impact statements Friday, his older sister, who is now 8, remembered that her little brother wanted to become a police officer.
“(Jacob’s) in heaven now,” the sisters said in court Friday. “I love Jacob so much. I don’t know why you killed him away from me,” she said. “He’s in heaven now.”
