Disability rights activist Alice Wong dies

Disability rights activist, writer and San Francisco resident Alice Wong has died.

Her family said the 51-year-old born in Indiana passed away Friday at a hospital because of an infection.

They went on to say she will be remembered as a fierce luminary in disability justice.

Per Wong’s wishes, her friend posted Wong’s final message Friday. It read in part, “I did not ever imagine I would live to this age and end up a writer, editor, activist, and more. I’m honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future.”

Wong was diagnosed as a small child with progressive neuromuscular disability.

She used a power wheelchair and an assistive breathing device.

Wong authored books like Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life, and edited the Disability Visibility Project blog, sharing her story and perspectives of others.

Wong’s final post said she had so many dreams that she wanted to fulfill and that there were a few in progress that might come to fruition in a few years.
