A Jefferson Park neighborhood was on lockdown Saturday following a deadly shooting that prompted a SWAT team response.
Police responded to a call around 1:30 p.m. of shots being fired in the area of 23rd Street and Arlington Avenue, according to the LAPD.
Upon arrival, officers located at least one man wounded by gunfire outside the residence. When officers attempted to approach the shooting victim, the alleged shooting suspect began firing toward the police. Officers fired back, and the suspect proceeded to barricade themselves inside the location.
The shooting victim died from their injuries, according to the LAPD.
Authorities shut down the neighborhood for hours as SWAT resources responded to the location.
Newschopper4 was over the active scene where several large armored vehicles and dozens of SWAT officers surrounded the home. Mental health professionals were also on-site to get the barricaded man out.
After the hours-long standoff, authorities were able to get the man into custody.
“We used a lot of techniques and tools that were available to them. But the main point is we went in there and took the suspect into custody without further incident,” said LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh. “That suspect is being transported to a nearby hospital where he will be evaluated for some injuries. We don’t know how and when they’re sustained. That’s going to be up to medical staff.”
No officers or other community members were injured.
