Community remembers teens a year after fiery Piedmont crash

Thursday marks the anniversary of the Piedmont Tesla Cybertruck crash that killed three college students visiting home last Thanksgiving.

The pain of last year’s tragedy is still raw and felt deeply across Piedmont — from family and friends of the three students to complete strangers.

“These were great kids who had a really unfortunate accident and it’s all something that we hold and we miss,” resident Brian Crandall said.

The crash site on Hampton Avenue on Wednesday was turned into a temporary memorial marking the anniversary.

Flowers and candles with initials of the three Piedmont High School alumni surround the tree where the Cybertruck crashed, honoring the victims.

“It’s a signal of a strong community of people who really cared about these individuals and want to recognize that it happened, and that their lives are greatly impactful to Piedmont,” Crandall said.

The California Highway Patrol said alcohol, drugs and speed caused the driver to lose control.

Multiple lawsuits have been filed, including claims against Tesla over the Cybertruck’s power-lock door design, which families said trapped the students inside once the vehicle lost power.

Community members said the anniversary also serves as a safety reminder.

Tributes to the three teens now stretch across Piedmont, including commemorative benches in Crocker and Piedmont parks. The tributes are a reminder of the lives lost and the impact they continue to have.
