Chinatown residents fear loss of post office that was part of a promise

Five people were shot Tuesday afternoon in the Vermont Knolls area of South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Details about what led to the shooting at about 2:30 p.m. near Manchester Avenue and Figueroa Street were not immediately available. Crime scene tape was seen in the parking lot of a shopping center with a donut shop, pizza restaurant and market near the intersection.

The injured victims’ conditions ranged from fair to critical, according to the LAFD. Police said the victims’ ages ranged from 19 to 35.

No arrests were reported Tuesday afternoon.

Police said officers are searching for three people who fled the scene in a white Honda Civic. The shooting is believed to be gang-related.

The LAPD earlier told NBCLA that one person had died, but later said all five people who were shot are being treated at a hospital.

A nearby street was closed for the investigation in the neighborhood west of the 110 Freeway.

At about the same time, deputies were conducting a traffic stop in the area when they came under fire, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said. It was not immediately clear whether the gunfire was related to the deadly shooting. Deputies did not return fire and no one involved in the traffic stop was injured.
