More than 760,000 Los Angeles County residents in Congressional District 42 will see a change in their congressional representation as Proposition 50 will pass, according to an NBC News projection.
Congressional District 42 has been steadfastly Democratic as represented by Rep. Robert Garcia, a former Long Beach mayor and progressive voice within the Democratic Party.
But as Prop 50 is projected to pass, constituents in cities like Downey, Bellflower, Lakewood and Santa Fe Springs will suddenly be led by someone they did not vote for: Republican congressman Ken Calvert.

As “Yes” on Prop 50 hopes to redraw the congressional district maps in the state in favor of Democrats for the 2026 midterm elections, Congressional District 41 will move out the Inland Empire completely and move into the southeast LA County area.
When Gov. Gavin Newsom and California leaders looked to counter Texas’ redistricting efforts, Rep. Calvert’s Congressional District 41, which includes cities like Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert, became among those on the chopper blocks.

Calvert, who narrowly won reelection in 2024 with fewer than 10,000 votes, already submitted paperwork to the Federal Election Commission to run for reelection in 2026.
While Calvert has been an influential Republican congressmember for nearly three decades, the 2026 election could be an uphill battle for him if Prop 50 passes.
The area that would become part of Congressional District 41 has been a Democratic stronghold as Rep. Garcia won by nearly 70% of the votes and Kamala Harris won by 58% votes in the 2024 elections.
Meanwhile, some of those in Congressional District 41 will soon be represented by Rep. Raul Ruiz, a Democrat, while others will have outgoing GOP Congressman Darrell Issa, who will retired after January 2027.
