Cal State Long Beach’s on-campus bar the Nugget has closed down for good, though a replacement is in the works in the coming years.
The popular beer and wine hangout, which opened in 1976 and also served food, was already slated to close in December, but an expensive electrical failure last month accelerated that time-line.
“We’re sad to share that the Nugget Grill & Pub is now closed. Due to unforeseen building damage caused by failing infrastructure, this beloved campus spot can no longer operate,” according to a message on the university’s web site.
“For more than 40 years, the Nugget has been more than a restaurant to this campus. It has been a place where The Beach community could come together for meals, music and memories. Friendships were formed, relationships were started, and core college memories were written within its walls. While we wish we had one last semester together, we want to honor the legacy of the Nugget and celebrate what it has meant to everyone at The Beach,” the statement continued.
According to the Long Beach Post, old water heaters leaked onto an electrical transformer last month, causing a power outage, and the resulting damage would have been too expensive to repair with the restaurant/bar slated to close soon anyway.
“We were looking forward to one final semester in the space,” Cyndi Farrington, chief business officer of Beach Shops, told the Post. “We didn’t get to have that final curtain call.”
A new beer joint and restaurant is planned for the campus as part of a major renovation to the Student Union, but that facility won’t open for at least another three years, the Post added.
