Bay Area mayors launch fund to help immigrants

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is in the Bay Area this weekend to kick off the countdown to Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

San Francisco and the greater Bay Area will host festivities for the massive sporting event on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026.

“We are just thrilled about Super Bowl LX,” Goodell said Friday. “This is going to be a great community because you know how to do big events. This is not just a sports town. It’s a cultural superstar.”

What will be different compared to Super Bowl 50?

Super Bowl 50, played on Feb. 7, 2016, marks the last time the Bay Area hosted the big game.

The head of the Bay Area Host Committee back then was current San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. At the time, he said there was some resistance to hosting a Super Bowl. But that’s all different now. He said elected leaders across the region have been in lockstep to host Super Bowl LX.

“And now to be quite honest we need it more as a region,” he said. “We’re coming off a really rough time.”

Some of the most obvious preparations being made for the Super Bowl are roughly $200 million in upgrades at Levi’s Stadium, ranging from 4K video displays to LED lighting.

Where will Super Bowl events will be held?

San Francisco will be hosting most of the events in the week leading up to the big game. The theme is innovation.

The Bay Area Host Committee is also planning other events across the region.

What kind of impact will the Super Bowl have on the Bay Area?

The economic impact of the Super Bowl for the Bay Area could be hundreds of millions of dollars.

The NFL also sees the Super Bowl as more than a game. Goodell said it’s a weeklong event that allows the sport to unite the country and grow globally.

“This is an opportunity for you to show off the great progress that’s happening in this community,” he said. “You don’t just see it, you feel it. I think that’s a great thing. I can’t wait for the Super Bowl to be here and share it with the world.”

Goodell said the Super Bowl will shine a light on the spirit and the innovation that the Bay Area has to offer.

“You feel the spirit and you feel the positivity which is so much of what we’re so excited about bringing our Super Bowl to this community,” he said.

Has a team ever won a Super Bowl in their home stadium?

San Francisco 49ers fans will be hoping their squad hoists the Lombardi Trophy on Super Bowl Sunday.

Two teams have won the Super Bowl in their home stadium: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV and the Los Angeles Rams the following season.

The 49ers did win a local Super Bowl XIX, but it was played at Stanford Stadium, not their home at Candlestick Park.
