Authorities Search for Driver Who Fatally Struck Pedestrian in Berkeley

Authorities are searching for a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian while fleeing from police in Berkeley Monday morning.

A University of California, Berkeley police officer around 10:30 a.m. spotted the driver parked on the side of a road and heard a woman screaming inside the vehicle, police said. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped off, prompting the officer to follow them.

Near the intersection of University Avenue and Sixth Street, the driver drove up on a sidewalk and fatally struck the pedestrian, police said.

The driver was last seen fleeing onto Interstate 80, according to police. The car they were in was described as a gray four-door Nissan with two people inside, possibly a male and a female.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Berkeley police at 510-981-5900.
