Emergency crews responded to reports of a downed helicopter in Huntington Beach on Saturday.
Video captured by a beachgoer showed a helicopter at a low altitude Saturday over the beach as visitors watched in confusion. As the video goes on, the helicopter spins down to the ground, crashing in the 21500 block of Pacific Coast Highway. Several palm trees appeared to have broken the fall.
Fire crews responded to the crash around 2 p.m. to find the helicopter up against a bridge, according to Matt Kubota, Huntington Beach Fire Department battalion chief.
“The five people that were transported to the hospital they are in an unknown condition right now, but as far as we know, there has been no further changes in those conditions,” said Kubota.
It’s unclear what caused the aircraft to crash.
Two people aboard the helicopter were safely pulled from the wreckage, police said. Three people on the ground were injured in the crash; all five people hurt in the incident have been hospitalized. The severity of their injuries is unclear.
The helicopter was part of the Cars N’ Copters event scheduled for Sunday, according to officials.
The investigation is ongoing.
