A dog Friday was undergoing treatment in Anaheim after he was forced into a plastic bag and thrown over the fence of an animal hospital.
Surveillance video showed a woman walking toward the fence at Anaheim’s University Veterinary Center, hoisting the bag with the dog over the barrier.
Dr. Ash Hakhamian, the center’s medical director, found the dog later that morning. He said the male Maltese mix suffered severe injuries from his fall, and that part of the fence’s spike strip was knocked off.
“To see he went through this, and then hit his face or whatever he hit in that bag, and we found he sustained injuries to his jaw,” Hakhamian said. “It’s just an insult to an existing injury.”
When Hakhamian found the dog, he said there were signs of neglect.
“The countless fleas all over his body, the matting,” Hakhamian said.
The dog is being treated at Orange County Animal Care.
The Anaheim Police Department said the woman who threw the dog lives near the center and was interviewed by the police. Officers said they have given the Orange County district attorney information about the woman to potentially seek charges.
Hakhamian said while he’s gotten a lot of calls about adopting the dog, the pup won’t be up for adoption for another few weeks as he recovers.
Animal owners who no longer can take care of their pets should reach out to local shelters, rescue groups or pet hospitals for resources, Hakhamian said.
