Underdog 49ers Have Path to Victory vs. Vikings


The 49ers go into Sunday’s season opener at Minnesota as underdogs. It’s a familiar position for a San Francisco team that has been 5-11, 2-14 and 6-10 over its three previous seasons.

Yet there’s a different feeling around this year’s team, based on its five straight wins to finish 2017, the play of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and some key offseason additions in free agency and the draft. Though the Vikings have a shiny new quarterback in Kirk Cousins and a terrific defense – two reasons they are listed as anywhere from 5- to 6½-point favorites – the Niners could pull an upset Sunday and start 2018 with a victory. How could it happen? Here are five keys:
