‘Time for Oakland to step it up': New effort to address police staffing crisis

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Berkeley area early Monday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake, which hit at 2:56 a.m., was centered two miles from Berkeley and occurred on the Hayward fault, the USGS said.

!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,(function(e){if(void 0!==e.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var t=document.querySelectorAll(“iframe”);for(var a in e.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var r=0;r<t.length;r++){if(t[r].contentWindow===e.source)t[r].style.height=e.data[“datawrapper-height”][a]+”px”}}}))}();

“It feels like a freight train is going through your house,” Berkeley resident Karen Crabotto said. “Everything is just rattling, shaking.”

No injuries or major damage was reported, but some businesses said windows were broken and merchandise tumbled from shelves.

Moraga resident Catherine Logan said wine glasses fell from her cupboards, leaving shattered glass on her kitchen floor. The shaking also tilted some pictures and even knocked one off a wall.

“All my dresser drawers opened up,” she said. “The medicine cabinet, all the things inside had fallen into the sink.”

The quake was downgraded to 4.3 from a preliminary 4.6. A 2.6 magnitude aftershock was recorded at 8:05 a.m., followed hours later by a 3.0 magnitude aftershock at 6:21 p.m., the USGS said.

BART trains ran with delays for several hours as crews made safety inspections of the tracks systemwide. BART said trains returned to regular service around midday.

The USGS said the last quake of a similar size near Berkeley was a magnitude 4.4 that hit on Jan. 4, 2018.
