A big road project is about to get underway along one of San Francisco’s busiest roads, 19th Avenue, which is also known as Highway 1.
The project’s first phase begins on Monday. Caltrans is working on the stretch of 19th Avenue starting at Sloat heading north.
Parking strip repaving will be done first before crews start repaving lanes.
“The first phase is strictly the repaving of the parking strips, the second phase starts around spring of 2026 will be the full repaving of all six of the lanes south bound and north bound,” said Lori Shepherd with Caltrans.
Caltrans says the project is a complete rehab of 19th Avenue. The project will repave lanes in each direction between Lincoln and Holloway.
In phase one: two lanes will always be open, and one lane closed in the direction where crews are working. Lanes in the other direction will stay open.
But Caltrans warns drivers may want to keep some things in mind.
“Know that they can always get through it will just be a little bit back up as they approach the active work site, just know also this is not the whole road being repaved this is section by section so half block sections that is the active work sites,” said Shepherd.
For drivers who want to avoid 19th all together, Caltrans suggests using Sunset Boulevard as an alternative route.
Phase one is expected to be done in spring, full paving expected to be completed by the end of next year.
