A Peninsula youth football team has won the right to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl in North Carolina, but the trip includes a price tag not all the team’s players can afford.
While the Redwood City 49ers celebrate their achievement, they are also focused on getting all 30 players to Charlotte for the national championship game.
“The kids have worked so hard for this all year long and I couldn’t be much more proud of them making it this far and getting an opportunity to play for the national championship,” head coach Kamari Fort said.
Accommodations and food will cost an estimated $40,000. Some of the players’ families said they simply cannot afford their share.
“It’s very expensive,” parent Stephanie Howard said. “It’s a lot of money for each family to be able to come up with. Many of them come from single-family homes or families that both parents are working one or two jobs to be able to make this work. Part of Redwood City 49ers is to get everybody there.”
The team has started a GoFundMe effort with hopes of getting everyone to the big game on December 7 in Charlotte.
