Nonprofit hosts turkey giveaway in Richmond to help the community

Hundreds of turkeys and bags filled with all the fixings were distributed to families in the East Bay ahead of Thanksgiving.

In Richmond Sunday, families in need drove up to receive turkeys and bags of food – everything they need to make a Thanksgiving meal.

Volunteers were standing by to load up the food.

“I enjoy giving back and this year has been really extra economically hard for individuals in the community, so I felt like this year I really wanted to give back,” said Kimberly Nutting, a volunteer.

This was the 10th annual event hosted by the nonprofit The Black Neighborhood.

“Technically it’s a turkey giveaway, we’ve always called it a turkey drive because the community donates items up until today and we will be distributing,” said Cory Elliott, co-founder and president of the nonprofit.

“Were really all about community safe spaces, domestic violence prevention mental health is really really big for us,” Elliott continued.

Each year they have given out 500 turkeys and hundreds of bags of food. Families pre-register for the giveaway and this year, interest started early with people calling two months ahead. Elliott says it’s something people count on.

“We collaborated with Prospect Sierra Schools, and they donated 500 turkeys, and the community donates the rest,” explained Elliott.

Volunteers say they want to be a part of it.

“I wanted to do something and her to give back to the community,” said Alejandro Reyes a volunteer.
