At Pawty Little Things in Bellflower, workers and volunteers had one mission in mind Monday: give back to the community.
The boutique gave away grocery staples like eggs, milk and vegetables to dozens of those who needed them.
“In a time everybody is having a lot of issues right now with regards to being able to feed their family with the benefits being cut, it felt like the right thing to do,” said Jessica O’Neal, the store’s founder.
For those involved, the giveaway was sparked by the cycle of lending a hand that exists within the community.
“It’s not about what you have,” said Lynn Hillard, O’Neal’s godmother and a volunteer. “It’s about what you give.”
For O’Neal, though, one moment stands out from the rest.
She was on her way home from picking up lunch one day when she saw a man across the street looking through trash for food. That was when she decided to give him her lunch instead.
“The greatest feeling that I get back to anything that I do is feeling that I made a difference in somebody’s life,” O’Neal said.
The boutique also gave back to pets.
“Sometimes animals are sent to you more so than the other way around,” said store manager Vivian Delarosa.
The store passed out bags of food from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
